What is a VersaCAMM?
Have you ever wondered how the photographic advertising images that you see on the sides of vans and buses are produced? Well the answer is giant ink-jet printers/cutters designed to work on vinyl materials.
The VersaCAMM SP-300V is Roland’s entry level machine in this market (in principle a very large CAMM 1 with an ink-jet print head attached). Of course, it is an extremely sophisticated commercial machine designed primarily for use in the sign trade. Commercially, the machines are used for all manner of signage, posters, floor graphics, point of sale displays, decals, labels, heat transfers for garments, etc., etc. No wonder it is called the VersaCAMM!

What can I do with a VersaCAMM?
For education, the benefits of having one of these machines is clear, an immediate improvement in the quality and scope of graphic products of all sorts. With its large format meaning that really large jobs can be tackled, or whole class work sets can be printed and cut in one easy operation. In a broader context, this machine has the potential to improve the quality of a wide range of D&T projects, eg., clear and white vinyl can be printed and then cut to add a professional finishing touch to prototype models or product packaging.
The VersaCAMM can also be extremely useful around the school for printing large pvc banners, to advertise school events, and large classroom signage. The commercial nature of the machine also means that it can easily be put to good use by students running mini enterprise companies or by the school itself to produce promotional materials, such as personalised achievement stickers and printed canvasses of student’s artwork or school photographs.
N.B. Although the VersaCAMM cuts and scores card with ease it will not print onto standard card materials. |

Just how clever is the technology?
This machine has some pretty sophisticated features. On the printing side it uses variable droplet piezo ink-jet technology, combined with specially developed eco friendly low solvent inks. This means low odour, high resolution printing with up to 3 year external durability. A patented Quadralign feature allows media to be printed, removed and laminated, (eg., to provide protection for floor signs) then re-inserted and automatically re-aligned for cutting. The machine has pre and post heating of the media, and even automatic sheet cut off.
Why should I buy a VersaCAMM?
For schools and colleges which aspire to professional quality standards and working practices, a VersaCAMM must be considered as a serious option. It also makes an ideal machine as a shared resource, perhaps in an LEA resource centre, or in a hub school such as a Technology College.
