What is a RouterCAM?
There are some situations where size really does matter! When it comes to furniture manufacture for example, it’s no good if your table top will not fit on your CNC router. For this reason TechSoft now supply two powerful, high speed CNC routers with very large machining envelopes.
Of course, in schools, versatility, ease of use and reliability are also important. TechSoft have ensured that machines in the RouterCAM range link easily to 2D Design V2, are fully 3D capable, are simple to set up and operate, and use top quality commercial components.
What are the specs like?
Both machines offer very large work areas. The RouterCAM 700 (600 x 700mm, ie ., 1/8 of a sheet of ply), will deal with most furniture projects with ease. The RouterCAM 1220 (1220 x 700mm, ie ., 1/4 of a sheet of ply), will cope with really large projects, or will accommodate several large projects being cut out at the same time. In addition, the Z travel of 120mm allows serious 3D work if required.
Speed is important too. If you are cutting out a whole class set of projects in one go, you want machining to be finished before next week’s lesson! The RouterCAMs won’t disappoint, with a top speed of 66mm/sec (4000mm/min), they are real flyers.
N.B. If you require an even larger work area, please contact TechSoft to discuss this. |

What type of spindle motor does a RouterCAM use?
All RouterCAMs are supplied with top quality 1.2KW commercial spindle motors. These high specification inverter driven motors are 100% rated for continuous high speed operation. They have a speed range of 12,000 - 24,000rpm, and have constant cutting torque. In short, all RouterCAMs are supplied with a high power, purpose built motor, and not just a hand router bolted on. |
|
|
| |
|
How is it constructed?
Both RouterCAMs have a welded steel chassis for strength, and a rigid aluminium gantry structure to enable high speed operation.
This rigid construction enables the RouterCAM to perform accurate and high quality cuts even at high speeds. The drive system of the RouterCAM is made from precision screw drives with preloaded ballnuts, and a fully enclosed ball recirculation system on all axes.
Of course, safety is built into the design of the machine, as it is supplied with a fully interlocked safety case. |
|
| |
|
What is it like to use?
In operation, the machine is simplicity itself. It is primarily controlled through intuitive on-screen software. The safety case has interlocked doors both at the front of the machine and down one side. This allows exemplary access to the work table, both for setting up purposes and for material handling. |
|
How about work holding? A vacuum table is an essential part of any large format router, enabling large sheets of material to be held down quickly and easily, without the need to screw down or clamp the material.
All RouterCAMs are fitted with a vacuum bed system as standard. The vacuum bed is integrated into the frame of the machine, for maximum stability. The bed has a machined surface, covered with a sacrificial diffuser sheet, which enhances the vacuum hold-down. However, should there be a need for additional work holding, for awkward workpieces for example, mechanical clamps are also supplied.

| |
What about software?
RouterCAMs can be driven by 2D Design V2. This will easily deal with users requirements for milling and engraving.
For 3D designs we recommend SolidWorks. This represents the best balance of power versus ease of use available today, in a full blown solid modelling package. Whichever solid modelling package you use, you will need to load designs into a machining package to drive the machine. Visual Toolpath is ideal for this and is supplied free with the machine.
Other 3D programs ideal for schools are VCarve and PhotoVCarve. These are dead easy to use and produce stunning results.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONAL EXTRAS? |

Self-Centering Vice
3D machining one side of an object is easy, but if the object needs to be machined all round how do you hold it? TechSoft have designed a low cost solution to this problem, a special self-centering vice. 3D objects are machined into a block, which can then be accurately turned over for machining the other surface (two sided machining). Complex objects can be machined from four sides.
The vice fits easily onto the machine bed and can be quickly removed when not required. The use of the self-centering vice is fully supported within Visual Toolpath for both 2 and 4 sided machining. |

The RouterCAM 700 is ideal for furniture making, and can also tackle most other milling and routing operations in both 2D and 3D. It is a large capacity machine, but it is not overwhelming, and it should find a suitable space for itself in most D&T departments.
This will be the perfect compromise of size, capability and price for many schools.
