Accurate Drawing and Design Software for Key stage 2
| |
|
|
Traditionally most drawing on a computer at key stage 2 is done using “painting” software. In many ways this can be very limiting, and it is a poor foundation for drawing practice in key stages 3,4 and beyond.
Painting software works by “colouring in” the pixels (dots on the screen). It is not possible to draw accurately to scale, or to edit a drawing easily (other than by rubbing out or overdrawing). Primary Design is a “vector” package. Each object (line, circle, curve, etc.) is drawn individually. It can be drawn accurately to size. Each object (or group of objects), can be selected, moved, copied, enlarged, rotated, deleted, etc.

This way of working is standard for most commercial graphic design and computer aided design software. It is not difficult to master, in fact it is very logical and intuitive.
Primary Design has a simple Windows compatible user interface. It has clear on screen prompts using simple straightforward language. For different age/ability differentiation, it has three distinct levels which the teacher may quickly swap between. The simpler levels have the more sophisticated options removed.

The extra capabilities that this software provides prove invaluable for scale drawings, pattern design, modelling, etc. The transformation functions also provide powerful new tools for Maths/Numeracy teaching.
For Design and Technology teaching, pupils might draw part of a project (perhaps the base of a simple buggy) accurately to size, then print it onto paper on a standard printer, stick it to a sheet of corroflute/balsa, etc., then cut it out with a hand/shaper saw, etc. This method is great for any parts that have to be made reasonably accurately, even very simple things like discs for wheels.
Primary Design heralds a new era in modern design drawing practice for key stage 2 pupils. For those pupils moving on to secondary schools using Design Tools - 2D Design (now well established as a secondary school standard), Primary Design offers a seamless transition in design software

- A wide variety of drawing functions, lines, curves, arcs, circles, tangents, polygons, etc.
- Great text facilities, use any Truetype font, any size, any colour, any position and any orientation.
- Comprehensive transformation functions, move, rotate, mirror image and copy.
- Easy to access grid function allows drawing to lock onto a cm or a mm grid, or even an isometric grid for simple 3D drawing.
- Zoom facilities allow different parts of the drawing to be worked on at different scales.
- Powerful editing functions allow full control over drawing detail and easy manipulation.
- Cut and paste facilities allow links to many other packages, eg., put your drawing into a document on your word processor (great for worksheets!).
- Import/Export WMF, EMF, DXF, HPGL, Acorn Draw and Designer V3 files.
- Output via Windows printer drivers to any standard printer, or to a Roland STIKA, (an ideal CAD/CAM system for key stage 2).

* A student licence allows a school/college to distribute a special non-output version of the software to students for home use. Students will be able to save work for output back at school. Schools may choose to charge a nominal amount (eg., £5) per student, to recoup the cost. (Only available to site license holders.)
** Primary Design is only available at this special low price to schools teaching students of year 6 and below. All other establishments must pay the full price of £145 for a single copy, £395 for a site licence. |
