Crisp, Vibrant Image Transfer onto a Range of Standard Materials |
What is Image Transfer?
You may have noticed the number of high quality personalised printed products that are currently available. Photographs on mugs and plates, digital images on T-shirts, mouse mats, etc. Many of these products have been created using the sublimation process. (Some schools have already invested in sublimation equipment.) Sublimation involves printing the image with special inks onto special paper, using a special printer. The paper is then pressed with heat onto the product to fix the image in place.
At TechSoft we like to offer the latest and most innovative products, which is why we are promoting a new image transfer system which we believe has significant advantages over the sublimation process.
The Laser Image Transfer (LIT) system was developed by TheMagicTouch (TMT), a company with a long history of creating innovative printing products. TechSoft are now working closely with TMT to bring LIT to schools.

|
| |
How does it work?
LIT is a process whereby a digital image is printed with a TMT laser printer onto a special carrier paper. The image is then transferred through heat and pressure (normally using a heat press) into the surface of a substrate such as plastic, wood, cloth, etc. The beauty of the system is that it does not require specialist inks or a dedicated specialist printer, and that the images can be transferred to any number of standard materials.
|
|
| |
What can I transfer images onto?
Laser images can be transferred onto a huge array of non-specialist materials such as 100% cotton T-shirts, wood, metal, acrylic, ceramics, cork, etc.
Commercially LIT is used to create personalised or promotional products such as T-shirts, mugs, mouse mats, coasters, etc. You can use it in a similar way on a wide range of D&T projects, or even for fund raising.
|
| |
What is a TMT laser printer?
TMT laser printers are printers which have been specially modified to take all types of LIT paper, but can still be used for all normal printing operations. TechSoft offer two TMT laser printers, which come complete with a full manufacturer’s warranty. |
| |
| What are the advantages of LIT over sublimation The sublimation process requires special inks and a dedicated printer that cannot be used for normal printing. The TMT laser printers used for LIT use standard toner and can be used for all other normal printing.
Sublimated images can only be transferred onto products which have a special polymer coating, or onto polyester textiles. LIT images can be used on a wide variety of everyday materials and objects. |
| |
What else do I need?
Apart from the laser printer, appropriate image transfer paper and application pads you will need a heat press to transfer the image from the paper to the substrate. There are two types of heat press available in our product range. The manual swing press is the ideal machine for most users as it offers very good results at a reasonable price. The clam press will work with LIT onto textiles, but may not give consistent results on harder substrates and is therefore not recommended for this process. For LIT onto mugs we offer specially designed mug presses. We also offer a cap press for LIT onto a range of headwear.

What is LIT/CAM?
TechSoft are once again pushing the boundaries by integrating LIT with milling/routing or laser cutting. Transfer patterns, photographs or specially created graphics to sheets of plastic, wood, etc., which can then be machined into flat pack, 2.5D slot jointed products (see right).

You can also utilise LIT with 3D products, such as the vac-formed boat hull (see right). |

What about software?
As with any standard laser printer you can output designs from a range of graphic programs. However, with its newly enhanced graphic features, we would highly recommend using 2D Design V2 to get the most from LIT. When combining LIT and CAM, 2D Design V2 is essential.
